If you’re planning a unit on African animals, savanna ecosystems or grassland habitats, then I can’t stress to you enough: The visuals are EVERYTHING!

Young students need to see the tall acacia trees, the sprawling plains and the incredible animals that call Africa home. But finding consistent, high-quality, kid-friendly images can be a challenge. That’s where the right clipart sets make all the difference.

In this post, I’ll walk you through some potentially suitable clipart collections for teaching about African animals and their complex habitats. I’ll also try to include some practical classroom ideas you can use to build engaging lessons, centers and displays.

Why Teach African Animals & Habitats?

African animals capture children’s imagination like few other topics do. From the towering giraffe to the powerful lion, these creatures offer endless opportunities for science, literacy, geography, and art. More importantly, studying African habitats helps students understand key concepts like adaptation, food chains and biodiversity.

Plus, you might even be able to answer some very valid questions your students might be asking. Like why do giraffes have long necks? Why do elephants have large ears? Or hy do zebras live in herds? These questions may naturally arise as children immerse themselves in the world of the savanna.

To teach these concepts effectively, you’ll need some pretty engaging visuals that are accurate, engaging and most importantly, easy for for you students to digest! The right clipart allows you to create everything from sorting games to writing prompts to interactive notebook activities.

Essential Clipart Sets for Your African Unit

Here are the specific clipart sets I recommend for a rich, well-rounded African animals and life cycles.

1. Life Cycle Clipart Bundle #5

This set is packed with several African animals all in one bundle. The set features life cycles for the lion, giraffe, zebra and more. There’s also individual African animals in the same style outside of the bundle which include the elephant, rhino, hyena, cheetah, baboon and meerkat.

These sets and bundles also include baby animals, specifically for discussing life cycles and family groups. Each image is also a transparent PNG so you can layer them onto any background. Did I also mention that they all come in color and black and white line art variations?

Point is, you can use these animals for a variety of learning materials including flashcards, matching games, writing prompts (“If I had a pet giraffe etc…”), or as cutouts for a savanna diorama.

2. African Savanna Habitat & Landscape Clipart Set – Setting the Scene

Now we all know that nimals don’t live in a vacuum! You’ll need background elements to create the savanna environment and I feel that this set is really perfect for covering that. It includes a variety of different backgrounds and settings taking place in the African Savanna.

With this graphic set, students can build their own habitat scenes, label the parts of an ecosystem or even add animals from the mentioned sets from above. You can also use the backgrounds for bulletin board displays that transport your classroom to the Serengeti. This set also includes both color and black and white variants.

Classroom Activity Ideas Using These Sets

Now that you have the clipart sets you need, here are three ready-to-use activities.

Activity 1: “Build a Savanna” Diorama (Whole Class or Center)
Print multiple copies of the African habitat background and individual animals. Have students cut out the animals and arrange them on the background. Then, add trees, rocks, and grasses. For a written component, ask students to label three animals and write one adaptation for each (e.g., “The giraffe has a long neck to reach high leaves”). This works as a center, a small group activity, or a whole-class display.

Activity 2: Animal Adaptation Sort (Science Center)
Create a sorting mat with two columns: “Physical Adaptations” (body features) and “Behavioral Adaptations” (actions). Provide clipart images of animal body parts (lion’s sharp teeth, zebra’s stripes, elephant’s trunk, giraffe’s long neck, meerkat’s claws) alongside behavior images (lion hunting, zebra migrating, ostrich burying eggs). Students sort the images into the correct column. This activity directly addresses life science standards about how structures and behaviors help organisms survive.

Activity 3: African Animal Research Report (Literacy + Science)
Give each student (or pair) a different African animal clipart image. Using books or online resources, they research the animal’s habitat, diet, adaptations, and an interesting fact. They then write a short report and paste the clipart image at the top. For younger students, use a simple fill-in-the-blank template. For older grades, require a paragraph with a topic sentence. Display all the reports on a bulletin board titled “Exploring the African Savanna.”
