Can I be real with the teachers out there for a second?
Teaching fractions to 3rd graders is NOT for the faint of heart. You write “1/4” on the board and your students are just staring blankly at it. Trying to explain to them that a bigger denominator actually means smaller pieces is a real struggle sometimes. You can just hear their brains short-circuiting!
Raise your hand if you’ve been there. Raises own hand.
Here’s what I’ve learned after years of trial and error: Kids are visual learners, therefore they need to SEE the fractions before they can begin to understand them,
One of the easiest, most affordable ways to help them see? Good old-fashioned clipart.
Whether you’re printing materials for small groups or building digital activities, using clipart is like giving your students a pair of glasses they didn’t know they needed. Let me show you what I mean.
Why Clipart Works for Fractions
Fractions are a totally abstract concept. A number like “1/2” doesn’t usually look like anything to a young student. But a picture of a cute pizza cut down the middle? That makes more sense!
When you use clipart to teach fractions, you’re building a bridge between the weird math symbols and the real world. Plus, clipart is:
-
Clear: No distracting photography backgrounds.
-
Consistent: You control the colors and sizes.
-
Endless: You can make as many examples as you need.
And if you grab clipart here at my shop, you’re getting graphics that are specifically designed with little learners in mind.
1. Start with Food Images
Now, I don’t make the rules here, but if you want an 8-year-old to pay attention, just show them food. Pizza works great here because let’s face it. Kids LOVE pizza, most at least!
The Activity: Pizza Fractions!
- Print out circles (these are going to be your pizzas).
- Give students clipart toppings—pepperoni, mushrooms, olives, whatever you want.
- Say, “Cover half your pizza with pepperoni.” Watch them actually get it right.
- Level up: “Cover one-fourth of your pizza with mushrooms. Now cover one-eighth with olives.”
The beauty here is that they’re manipulating real life pieces. They’re seeing that two-fourths covers the same amount as one-half. They’re not just memorizing rules—they’re seeing why the rules work.

2. Partitioning Shapes
For a child who os struggling, that rectangle might as well be a blank white wall. They might know know where to start immediately.
The Activity: Pre-Drawn Clipart Shapes
Instead of making them draw from scratch, give them clipart shapes that are already able to be divided evenly.
-
A rectangular brownie
-
A square pan of cornbread
-
A circular cookie
Ask your students to draw lines either on a sheet of paper or using the line tool in Google Slides to show halves, thirds or fourths.
Because the shape is cute and familiar, the task feels less like a math problem and more like a puzzle. And when they’re done, they can color it in. Never underestimate the power of coloring time to keep kids engaged!
3. Comparing Fractions with Visuals
“Why is 1/3 bigger than 1/4? It doesn’t make sense! Three is smaller than four.”
If you teach 3rd grade or younger, then you’ve likely heard something like this several times. And honestly, it’s logical. Kids are just following the rules they know about regular numbers!
The Activity: Side-by-Side Clipart
This is where clipart saves the day.
- Put two fraction clipart images side by side.
- One circle cut into thirds with one piece shaded in.
- One circle cut into fourths with one piece shaded in.
- Ask: “Which shaded piece is bigger?”
They can literally see that the third would be the larger one.
Tip: It might be easier to laminate a set of fraction pieces and stick a magnet on the back. Now you’ve got a whole-class demonstration tool for your whiteboard.
4. Fraction Word Problems That Don’t Feel Like Work
Word problems are the worst, right? All those words, all that text. By the time a struggling reader figures out what the words say, they’ve forgotten what they’re supposed to do.
The Activity: Clipart Story Problems
Try this instead of a traditional worksheet:
Show a clipart picture of a plate with 8 cookies.
“Marcus ate 3 cookies. What fraction of the cookies did he eat? What fraction are left?”
Show a clipart picture of a sandwich cut into fourths.
“Jada ate 2 pieces of her sandwich. What fraction did she eat?”
The picture does the heavy lifting. The kid can focus on the math instead of decoding the words. For your English language learners and struggling readers, this is a game-changer.
Idea 5: Fraction Kits They Can Keep
Here’s a Friday afternoon activity that pays dividends all year long.
Make a Fraction Flip Book
- Print multiple copies of the same shape in different sizes (circles work great).
2.Have students cut out:
-
One whole circle
-
A circle cut into halves
-
A circle cut into thirds
-
A circle cut into fourths
-
A circle cut into eighths (if you’re feeling ambitious)
-
- Color-code them if you want (all halves red, all fourths blue, etc.)
- Hole punch the corner and put them on a binder ring.
Now every kid has a personal fraction toolkit. When you’re teaching equivalent fractions, they can literally hold up two pieces and see if they’re the same size. When you’re teaching comparing, they can see which is bigger.
I have a variety of sets in my shop that are great for these examples I provided!
A Quick Note for Digital Learning
Doing this online? No problem.
Pop your fraction clipart into Google Slides. Make sure you click “Make a copy for each student” when you assign it. Now they can drag and drop pieces, draw lines, and type answers right on the slide.
Same concepts. Same visual power. Zero paper.

Teaching fractions is hard. But you don’t have to do it with just a whiteboard marker and prayers.
